Days like today make my job difficult, leaving me feeling humbled and a little proud to be working with Ron Reagan. We at Air America were all deeply saddened by the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy; it feels like we lost one of the strongest fighters for the greater good. As we talked about the legacy of Kennedy before our program we wanted to make sure we covered the story with grace, thoughtfulness and gratitude for both the Senator and his family. I think we did it right- well, I hope so.

Ron took a very, very rare moment to talk with his mother First Lady Nancy Reagan about her close friendship with Senator Kennedy and what he meant to her and her husband, President Reagan. Not the least of which is the fact that they were able to put their political persuasions aside to form a long and lasting bond built on a foundation of mutual respect. During the show a few unexpected things happened, as can with live radio. One amazing moment was when we received a call from Anne Douglas, wife of legendary actor Kirk Douglas and, of course, mother to Michael Douglas. Anne is a close family friend of the Reagan's and wanted to share a story with Ron about an evening she had with the Kennedy brothers, complete with singing by all three Kennedy boys. As we ponder, and even debate health care reform, I hope that no matter what side of the fence you are on, you will consider the great Senator and his passion to provide health care as a right of U.S. citizenship- something everyone deserves.
