Contributor to Subterfuge Seattle
I was excited. It had taken some convincing to get me here- as in, I had to convince the burley editor I was the right fit as an intern for his hunting and fishing magazine. I didn’t think it necessary to dwell on my never having hunted, fished, (or camped for that matter)- it was editing, writing! The editor swore a lot during that interview, particularly when I answered honestly that my career goal was fashion magazines. I couldn’t tell you why I was hired as an intern, and I’m sure he couldn’t either after that first day. His first words to me were: “Are those pink shoes?” I looked down at my very cute, kitschy wedges. “No one wearing pink shoes has ever worked on this magazine,” he said. Well, I did.
Somehow, pages of trophy kills and fishing stories led to Subterfuge. I still don’t fish, nor do I hunt; I still don’t wear camouflage or fleece… I’m considering “glamping”. Now, I write about parties packed with Seattle’s glamorous elite, reveling with ridiculously cool club kids, and I get to use the pages of Vogue and Nylon as my guide to dress. When I’m not acting as a writer for Subterfuge, I’m the assisting stylist to Sarah CapIes. Beautiful clothing is a work of art we get to wear. I find that so exciting. It’s a strange way to look at it, but if all the world’s a stage, then I’d like to think I’m wearing one hell of a costume.
I know the day will come when I have a hopeful intern in an interview. My first words will be,
“No one wearing True Religion denim has ever worked on this magazine.”
