When it comes to Seattle nightlife, I think you’d be hard pressed to venture out and not hear the name Colby Bartrug. You may recognize the name from numerous SAM events or the celebrated Comeback parties, which have enjoyed a five-year run at Chop Suey. If you don’t recognize her name, her accomplishments and track record are far too impressive to list in one mere article. I was lucky enough to be invited to this Seattle staple’s birthday bash hosted by W Hotel. I must say- as usual, she didn’t disappoint.
Colby has the arresting ability to scope the vibe of a room and execute her sets accordingly. I feel this specific dexterity is what keeps her close in the hearts of club-goers and leaves many a dance floor begging for more. In fact, if more DJs possessed Colby’s seemingly innate capability, I think the face of the electronic music scene today would fare much differently- don’t you? I hate to be cliché and mention the infamous quote by The Stranger but, I think it’s one of the few times they hit the nail on the head and therefore, it merits retelling. Colby B. has been dubbed, and I quote, “the best fucking club DJ in the universe,” and time and time again, this is indubitably proved to be so. I have had the distinct pleasure to see Colby perform many euphonious sets over the years and honestly, no event will draw me like those with her name attached to it. She’s everything one could want in a DJ- an intoxicatingly stylish woman with a knack for track selection that would put many internationally renowned DJs to shame.
As it was a birthday party for one of my favorite DJs, I felt the overwhelming desire to bring a little something to thank her for all the endless nights of fun and frenzied dancing my friends and I have shared thanks to her sets. I took a quick peruse through my record collection and gladly selected a much treasured original single of West End Girls by The Petshop Boys. A song of this caliber could do far grander things in the more than adept hands of DJ Colby B. Not even five minutes after opening her present, Colby had everyone on that floor busting a move. If you want a night of frenetic dancing, attend any event attached to her name; you will surely not regret it.
